Marin History Museum & Marin County Law Enforcement Museum Project - Update

A small group of us has been working closely with the Marin History Museum on the Marin County Law Enforcement Museum Project.  Harry Barbier was appointed to their Board of Directs a year or so ago and has been keeping our group up to date on the MHM's activities and how it is looking for our  Marin County Law Enforcement Museum Project.  With the issues surrounding COVAD-19 and the restrictions we've not been able to meet as a group or work with MHM staff.

Harry updated our group a couple of days ago.  A big "Thank you!" to Harry for all his work on this project and for housing all the donated material.  Here is his update.

There was no fundraiser this year, but the museum did get some money from the county to help with rent.  The museum applied to the city to get back into the Boyd gatehouse and it looks like that will happen.  They will take it over at the end of Jan if all goes well.  This would give us a place to display some of our items.  The museum itself in Novato is still closed to the public.  I would think  that by the first part of 2021 we could start to transfer some of our items to them, if this Covid thing calms down. They are working hard to get more money.  At the moment they have enough funds to last about 18 months if no other income is received, however the county has come forward to help and they are looking at other sources, so I am a little more hopeful that they will remain solvent. They are not going to look for a director for the time being, but Heather is still there.

I told Harry I was sad to learn of the news, but not surprised given the past fund raising problems faced by MHM.

Our group still has to conduct an inventory and enter the information into the MHM's database before we turn over any more material.  Harry will work on this next part of our efforts to get our donated material into MHM's facility and on display.

We'll update when we have more information.

San Rafael Public Safety Building Public Lobby - Update

Now that the new SR Public  Safety Building has opened, I want to share some disappointing news about the public lobby.  A small group of us had been asked by SRPD to volunteer to work with a committee to make suggestions on the public lobby layout and what could be placed there for display to honor the memories of both SRPD and SRFD.  There were representatives from the current SRPD and SRFD and the City of San Rafael and a couple of community members.

After a couple years of meetings and hundreds of hours spent collecting material and making recommendations, we were looking forward to the public opening and had hoped for a special showing for our Retired SRPD members.  Well, COVAD-19 sent that hope to the trash bin in a hurry.  The good news is that the construction of the new facility moved forward and in July 2020 the building was turned over to the SRPD and SRFD to start moving their people and equipment into place, which has now been completed.

Prior to things being moved, our small group wondered what decisions had been made on the displays in the public lobby and asked for some photos of the new lobby displays.  Sad news is that NOTHING has been placed in the public lobby and NONE of the special panels, shelving or display cases have been added to the lobby.

Needless to say our group is very, very, disappointed and upset over the lack of action by the City of San Rafael.

Knowing San Rafael like we do, it's probably a result of lack of money and politics.  We've reached out to some "insiders" hoping to learn more and see if the future of the lobby will someday hold all the memories our group put together.

Politics!  Bah humbug!

Artifact and Picture Collection Day

To all members of our Marin County Law Enforcement family we are inviting you to participate in efforts to capture and preserve our long, interesting Marin history.  As previously announced, our small group has officially joined with the Marin History Museum in these efforts.  Hence, we must begin to do our part to make this happen.
We now have a structure in place to receive items and images of our members in action or participating in day-to-day activities.  Our first major effort will be to receive any new artifacts and combine artifacts we already possess in one location.  After this first effort we will catalog what we have and begin the transfer of items to the Marin History Museum.
We've set our date for our FIRST collection event.  We had to cancel the one planned for May but this date is now set.  Any items of historic value will be welcome, also looking for photos (we can scan and return) and documents, especially radio rosters and I.D. number rosters.  We will be setting up another day in Sept.

Anyone wishing to turn items by appointment can do so by emailing me or calling me at 415-450-1019.
Date: Thursday, August 29, 2019
Time: 10:00 am - 2:00  pm
Location:     Barbier Security
                     20 Commercial Place, Novato
Many of our colleagues have indicated that they would like to help us complete the process.  This will center on article identification, tagging, and packaging.  Anyone have any experience in these activities?
You can certainly send us an email to let us know you are one of the willing.  There will be lots of work up front to capture things we already possess.  Later work will not be as intense but really rewarding, as we assemble our history for all to see and recognize.
We are looking for items of interest in law enforcement.
·      Pictures, video, and digital images
·      Newspaper or magazine articles
·      Maps
·      Department directives and memos

San Rafael Public Safety Building Ground Breaking Cermony

New San Rafael Public Safety Ground Breaking Ceremony
Held on January 11, 2018

Project Update - February 13, 2018

Our Public Safety Building Historical Lobby group met yesterday for the first time in over a year. Yea! This was a very productive meeting and we saw the building plans for the lobby for the first time. Some preliminary decisions were made and we learned what needs to be done next. Our Marin County Law Enforcement Museum Group will meet soon to identify what we need to do now to get ready for the next steps to place artifacts in the lobby of the new Public Safety Museum.

Project Update - September 23, 2016

Please note the following summary will appear on this Facebook page and on the Marin County Public Safety Museum Facebook page and on both websites for those projects.
Before I start the update, I’d like to remind you that we are still accepting donations of any artifacts, material or pictures that you, a family member or friend may want to contribute to our projects.  We can accept them now because Harry has offered storage at Barbier Security.
If you have pictures but don’t want to donate them, remember that we have the ability to scan them and save them.  That way you can share them with us but you can still keep the pictures.
I’d also like to remind you that volunteers are welcome to join either or both of our projects!  Just contact Harry Barbier, Tom Boyd, Jeff Franzini or myself or post a message on one of our FaceBook pages or websites.  I’ll include that information at the end of the update.
It’s been some time since we posted an update for the Marin County Law Enforcement Museum and the Marin County Public Safety Museum so here is an update as of September 23, 2016.  Note that Jeff has been on vacation for most of the summer and is not expected to return until mid-October.
The three of us, Harry Barbier, Tom Boyd and myself had been meeting on a regular basis to discuss both Museum projects but we have not met for the past couple of months because we have been meeting with a group called the San Rafael Public Safety History Group that was started a few months ago.
Its Chair is Dr. Stephen Mizroch, a member of the San Rafael Fire Commission, who has the backing of the San Rafael City Council to start the group and report back to the Mayor and Council.  The group has a representative from SRPD and SRFD as well as 2 members of the San Rafael Fire Commission and some at large San Rafael residents plus some retired people from both SRPD and SRFD.  Harry, Tom, Jeff and myself were invited by Captain Glenn McElderry to participate in this committee’s work.  Glenn is the Department’s representative for the new San Rafael Public Safety Building project and thus a member of the San Rafael Public Safety History Group.
The San Rafael Public Safety History Group was formed to make recommendations to the San Rafael City Council on what items to put on display in the public space located inside the front entrance to the new San Rafael Public Safety Building.  This project is well under way and final plans have been approved with fine tuning of the project now underway.
After attending the first couple of meetings of the San Rafael Public Safety History Group, it became apparent to us that many of the stated goals of the San Rafael Public Safety History Group overlapped those of our two museum projects.  I provided a history of our 2 groups to the San Rafael Public Safety History Group a couple of times in the hopes of clarifying our efforts to get our 2 projects up and running and to hopefully avoid a duplication of effort.
Because of the large overlap in goals, Harry and Tom, and myself, decided our smaller group (working on the 2 museum projects) did not need to meet again until it was clear what the San Rafael Public Safety History Group was going to do and how they were going to accomplish their goals once they were formalized.
1.      So our group for the Marin County Law Enforcement Museum and the Marin County Public Safety Museum, have not met for some time.  We’re waiting to see what comes from the San Rafael Public Safety History Group.
The architect met with us on 9/19/16, and answered many important questions. For example:
1.      There is only about 300 square feet of floor space available to display exhibits.
2.      There is a large amount of wall space available to display exhibits in the lobby and exhibition areas.
3.      There is enough room to install some display cabinets.  These could be fixed or mobile.
a.      The design and configuration of the display cabinets will be determined by the architect and brought back to us for our input.
4.      There is funding in the project to include lighting, electrical and computer and network connections.  This is critical and she will ensure there is enough flexibility to ensure any future expansion or changes.
5.      There is some funding for public art for the new building.
a.      There is a ton of wall space available throughout the building in both police and fire spaces to hang pictures.
6.      There is no funding for personnel to setup and maintain the exhibition area (floor, display cabinets or wall space areas).
There has been a lot of discussion about what to display in the exhibition area (floor and wall space) and the collection, inventory and storage of exhibits.  Much of this discussion overlaps the discussions we’ve had for our 2 projects.
We’ll continue to meet with the San Rafael Public Safety History Group and offer as much support as we can.  However, it is my opinion that some of the members of the San Rafael Public Safety History Group want to create a new group working within the framework of the San Rafael City organization just for this project rather than try and bring all 3 groups together working on a common set of goals.  Harry, Tom and I have expressed our interest in seeing the groups finding some way to work together to meet all of goals for all the groups.
The 3 groups are:
1.      The Marin County Law Enforcement Museum
2.      The Marin County Public Safety Museum
3.      The San Rafael Public Safety History Group
Whether or not this will be possible, remains to be seen.  There are some obvious obstacles ahead but the main thing we want to accomplish is to have some input into what the public exhibition area will look like and what exhibits will be put on display.
As more information becomes available in the future months, we’ll update you.  For now, there are no meetings planned until January 16, 2017.  The architect will return to report to us what she has developed from our ideas and suggestions.
